The Salmagundi Club is pleased to announce “Figuratively Speaking,” an open exhibition of portraiture and figurative work in all media. This is yet another in Salmagundi’s ongoing competitive exhibitions for the best in contemporary art.
Salmagundi encourages the exhibiting artists to invite their models to this reception, which will be held in honor of the many New York City models from whom we all draw inspiration.
Founded in 1871, the Salmagundi Club is one of the oldest art organizations in the United States. Housed in an historic brownstone mansion in Greenwich Village, New York City, the Club offers programs including art classes, exhibitions, painting demonstrations, and art auctions throughout the year for members and the general public. The Club owns a collection of over 1,500 works of art spanning its 140-year history and has a membership of nearly 850 artists and patrons. Its members have included important American artists such as Thomas Moran, William Merritt Chase, Louis Comfort Tiffany, N.C. Wyeth and Childe Hassam. Today the Club builds on this legacy by providing a center for the resurgence of representational art in America.

Jordan Sokol
Jordan’s work focuses on the human figure. In 2013, after a decade of studying and teaching in Italy he moved to Spain and began teaching privately from his studio in Madrid. In 2014 Jordan returned to the United States upon the invitation of The Florence Academy of Art to open their first official U.S. branch in Jersey City, NJ where he is currently the Academic Director.
Jordan has taught drawing and painting workshops throughout the United States and Europe including the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, the Canova Atelier in Rome, the Janus Collaborative in New York, and the Art Students League of New York. His work has been featured in numerous publications including ‘Lessons in Classical Drawing’ as well as ‘Lessons in Classical Painting Essential Techniques from Inside the Atelier’ by Juliette Aristides and in 2013 was honored as one of the ‘25 Artists of Tomorrow’ by American Artist Magazine. Jordan’s work has exhibited internationally, including London’s National Portrait Gallery as part of the 2015 BP Portrait exhibition, and is represented by Arcadia Contemporary in Los Angeles.
